This year’s programming languages

Date Arrow  January 30, 2007

Trying to keep my promise of learning a new programming language every year, I have identified a couple of candidates for 2007:

In any case, I want to get my hands dirtier with functional programming. And also, in the meanwhile, getting used to the new versions of old friends, both bringing new and interesting features:

If you have any suggestions, about other programming languages, do not hesitate to tell me in the comments below!

Interesting articles. I will also look more closely at Erlang. I would put Haskell in a similar class–it’s also well worth learning.

Lisp arguably should come before either of these in your education. I could argue that you’re not really a good programmer in any language until you know Lisp.

Also, I didn’t see Brooks’ Mythical Man Month on your bookshelf. This is *the* book–it was written in the early 70s (?) and everything else still pales by comparison.

Hi Mike! Thanks for your comments. And by the way, I’ve got Brooks’ masterpiece in my bookshelf ;) It was in part 3 of that article series! And I agree wit you, it’s an absolutely brilliant, amazing book. Even almost 35 years after its publication, it’s an excellent reading.
Finally, thanks for the pointers about Lisp! I will most probably have it as my 2008 programming language.
