LIFT07 Thursday: On Helping Each Other

Date Arrow  February 8, 2007

It was an interesting day on LIFT; many new contacts, a quick chat with Robert Scoble in the queue to lunch, a common agreement with Jens-Christian Fischer about how great Ruby on Rails is, and overall, the feeling that the people coming to the conference are really a smart group.

However, the most interesting of all of today’s conferences was the one given by Sugata Mitra about his “Hole in the Wall” experiences in India, showing how kids can spontaneously and organically help each other, teaching themselves on how to use a computer, even if they have never seen one before! Impressive, and the best presentation I’ve seen in many years.

I had the opportunity to ask Mr. Mitra about similar experiences in South America, Africa or other parts of Asia, and he mentioned about a South African experiment; in any case, I wonder how this could be done in South America. Knowing that in Argentina there are ongoing experiments on pure anarchist self-governance (done by adults!), I imagine that a similar experience on technology could be done. Do not hesitate to post here a comment if you have a reference to some self-teaching experiment in Latin America!
