Green Meme

Date Arrow  April 30, 2007

Danish blogger Henriette Weber Andersen has launched a Green Meme and asked others to participate. The idea is for bloggers to answer the same set of questions relating to environmental sustainability. I’ve been tagged by David, so here we go…

What do you do in your everyday life that you would consider green ?

In Switzerland recycling is part of the everyday culture; with my wife we recycle nearly everything: aluminium, glass, organic waste, paper, clothes, batteries, etc. You can recycle almost anything, and as it turns out, Switzerland has the world records of aluminium reusability (I think that at least 95% of the aluminium used here is recycled). The same goes for many other basic stuff.

Another “green” thing is to use the public transportation system intensively; my wife and I do not have a car, so we use the Swiss railway and bus system as intensively as possible. Which is actually a real pleasure; you can go almost everywhere (even spots far away up in the mountains) with it.

How are your surroundings supporting your green ways?

All my friends have the same habits. Actually in some cantons, you have the obligation to recycle (otherwise you have to pay for your extra garbage generation).

How are your surroundings standing in your way of green choices ?

Switzerland has a good intercity railway system, but it lacks a real policy about interurban transportation. Many people choose to use their cars, just because there aren’t enough buses between the main cities. You can move easily in the cities, between the big cities, but not outside of the big cities; in the rural areas it’s very difficult to move without a car.

Are there any actions you want to take to create a more green environment around you?

I am a big consumer of electricity. My wife and I are currently replacing our light bulbs by “greener” ones, and also reducing our overall consumption of electrical power. I would also like to be able to buy a hydrogen- or electricity-powered car in the future, instead of a fuel-powered one.

What is the biggest threat to the earth’s wellbeing these days?

Human beings.

Whom are you going to tag in the green meme?

Nadege Laici, Mauro, Laura Fähndrich and Christian DeBlis.
